Over this two-day practical course, Marc Fish will introduce students to the materials, equipment and techniques he uses to create metal finishes within his award-winning furniture and sculptural work.

Spray metal finishes offer an exciting way of applying a genuine metal surface to wood, MDF and other materials, creating finishes that can range from highly polished metal to aged, patinated and heavily textured surfaces.
Unlike metallic paints, spray metal systems contain real metal particles suspended within a binder.
Once applied and cured, the surface can be sanded, polished, burnished and patinated much like solid metal. Marc will demonstrate spray equipment and gun setup, mixing ratios, application techniques.
Students will prepare and spray their own samples, whilst experimenting with different approaches and textures. Marc will also share his own secret formula for making your own finish this will save over 80% over the cost of retail kits.
You do not need a spray set-up to benefit from this material. Marc will look at hand applied techniques.
Students will explore sanding through different grades, polishing and burnishing, as well as deliberately leaving areas rough or textured to create contrast. Also introduce patination and ageing, demonstrating how chemical patinas and different finishing techniques can dramatically alter the appearance of the same metal.

- Surface preparation, sealing and priming
- Mixing metal powders and binders

- Creating smooth and deliberately textured surfaces
- Sanding, polishing and refining the cured metal
- Creating matt, satin and highly polished finishes
- Chemical patination and ageing
- Troubleshooting common problems
Marc says –
“Throughout the two days, the emphasis will be on experimentation rather than producing a single finished project. Students will create a collection of samples demonstrating different metals, textures and finishing techniques that can become a useful reference for their own future work.”
Marc will also discuss how he approaches surface and material within his own work, particularly the use of contrast.
